Notre Dame to Help Lead Research Into Nanoelectronics

By Peter Ambrose

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The University of Notre Dame will be the site of one of four nanoelectronics research centers nationwide.

Gov. Mitch Daniels and other political leaders were in South Bend for the announcement Tuesday. Notre Dame will be the lead institute in a consortium that includes Purdue University, the University of Illinois, Penn State University and the University of Michigan, among others.

The goal is to find replacements for transistors that will allow
smaller and cheaper devices in everything from cell phones to computers.

Jeff Welser, director of the Semiconductor Research Corporation, says a similar center in Albany already has created a thousand jobs there. But officials say they can't predict how many jobs will be created in Indiana.
