Park Officials Burn 750 Acres of Prairie to Stimulate Growth

By Peter Ambrose

BATTLE GROUND, Ind. (AP) - Crews set fire to 750 acres of prairie at Prophetstown State Park as part of a controlled burn that created a smoke-plume visible for miles around.

A column of smoke rose several hundred feet yesterday as the
crews carefully burned the field at the park just north of Lafayette.

Park property manager Jason Getz says the controlled burns help
grasses to grow and eliminate plants and trees that don't belong in a prairie setting.

Purdue fire ecology instructor Stephen Creech says the burned
areas will have green sprouts in a few weeks.
