Traffic on a major thoroughfare in Southwest Fort Wayne will be seriously jammed up the next five weeks.
It has to do with a road construction project near Time Corners moving into a new phase.
The backups were substantial during five o’clock rush hour on Tuesday.
Barrels were set in place April 8th, to limit east and westbound travel on Jefferson to one lane through mid-day.
Traffic was slow but steady during the noon hour Tuesday, but at that time the volume of vehicles is far below rush hour traffic.
The lane restrictions allow crews to widen Jefferson, and install new curbs and drains.
The project has been pushed ahead one piece at a time, with one of the goals being to improve access to the Time Corners Mall.
David Ross/Fort Wayne City Engineer: " It’s such a busy area there with a lot of commercial shopping areas, restaurants, that we broke it into phases, so we could always keep the area open to local traffic."
Faye Funk/Motorist: " When it's all completed, everything is going to be fantastic, because right now it is such a stress. So, even though we have to put up with the construction for a little bit, the outcome is going to greatly outweigh what we've already dealt with."
The intersection of Jefferson, Covington and Getz roads will be re-configured starting in mid-May.
It’s a project that should usher in better traffic flow at that location as well.
A new traffic light was activated Tuesday at a brand new entrance to the Time Corners Mall.
