Oprah's Crew Coming to FW!

By Corinne Rose

(Fort Wayne, IN) -- Oprah's production crew will be here Saturday to film Fort Wayne's celebrations and fund-raiser for the Fort Wayne trails project.

She gave Indiana's NewsCenter $10,000 in seed money, and since that amount has now grown to close to $1 million... Fort Wayne could be featured in the finale of "Oprah's Big Give" next Sunday night... as one of the most successful community projects in the country.

Here's a look at one family who relies on the trails for their disabled daughter.

Karen Valentine\Mother: " Not knowing what's going to happen in the future because the prognosis is unsure."

4-year old Julia Valentine's life has been filled with obstacles.

Born with a genetic disorder that causes physical deformities, Julia's just had pins implanted in her hips as well as a bone marrow transplant.

A bright spot in her family's life -- their frequent walks along the Fort Wayne trail system.

Karen Valentine\Mother: " What's so great is the public library is right over there, there's shopping, there's Dairy Queen on one side of town, there's Zesto's on the other. And in the summer, it's just super to walk over there regardless if she's in her wheelchair because it's a nice, smooth ride. It's safe."

But another obstacle is that the trail system has portions of pavement yet to be built to connect 40 miles across Allen County.

Karen Valentine\Mother: " I always wanted them to be more connected. What that'll mean for all of us is that we can go on the trails without having it disconnected. So we can go further places." (14.35.33.26-14)

Oprah and Indiana's NewsCenter started the trail connection project with $10,000 in seed money.

You can help that grow by contributing to the cause and eliminating one more obstacle for Julia and her family -- and the rest of the community.

Join us Saturday at four events.

In Aboite, Indian Trails Park will host walk and bike activities at 9:30 a.m.

Up north at 10, a spring walk-a-mile at the Salomon Farm Park trail.

In New Haven at 10:30, Moser Park hosts a walk-ride with music and cheerleaders.

And at Headwaters Park, a run and walk begins at 12:30, ending in time for a huge community party at 2, with free food, music and give-aways.
