Help is on Way for Fort Wayne Rock Attack Victim

FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- There's a positive twist to report on a story that involved terrible pain and suffering for a young Fort Wayne woman.

Last month, Indiana’s NewsCenter featured a piece on 25-year old Erika Kinney, who is trying to get her life back together after being struck in the head with a large rock March 18th as she was riding in a car in south Fort Wayne.

She's doing better because of physical therapy, but she lost her hair following brain surgery, exposing a deep scar from the rock wound.

A local hair stylist touched by Kinney's ordeal hooked her up with what's called a "cranial prosthesis", which is like a wig, only it's made of real human hair, looks and feels more natural, and lasts longer.

The product would normally cost about two thousand dollars, but Kinney got hers for free.

Connie Bashop/"Shear Reflections" Hair Stylist: “ Something like that you're not prepared for, especially at 23 years old. One day you have hair and the next day you don't, and then when I saw this scar, I thought, she needs a cranial prosthesis and I think I have one that might work for her."

Erika Kinney/Hurt in Rock Attack: " Just to feel hair on my shoulders is exciting enough and I'm so thankful that she picked me to donate this to, I'm just so thankful."

Also, a concert to benefit Kinney is taking place Friday at Piere's Nightclub.

James Burton, a former lead guitarist for Elvis Presley, will be performing and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will help Kinney defray mounting uninsured medical expenses.

Meanwhile, two juveniles charged with propelling the rock that struck Kinney are about to have their day in court.

Friday, testimony will be presented in a hearing that is equivalent to a trial in the adult system.

The teenagers are charged with criminal recklessness.
