FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Area police gathered this morning to remember comrades killed in the line of duty.

The event was the sixth annual police officer memorial ceremony.

This year's special ceremony also dedicated the new law enforcement and firefighter memorial on north Wells Street. Nine area police officers killed in the line of duty over the last century were honored at the event.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry says having the memorial close to home is something especially important.

The memorial is expected to be complete sometime before the end of the year.
