Council Member Wants Full Accounting on Harrison Square Condo Project

Harrison Square project well under way desite issues about condo component of the project.

FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- One Fort Wayne City Council Member is calling for a full accounting to the public of the status of the Harrison Square condominium sales.

The housing component to the big development is battling lagging sales.

Contractors have made good progress on the baseball stadium to play host to the Fort Wayne Wizards starting in the 2009 season.

The area where the playing field will be situated is taking shape, and the outfield wall is also substantially in position.

But nothing has been started on the condo and retail component.

A representative from the firm marketing the condos, Martin Goldstine Knapke, called Indiana’s NewsCenter late Tuesday afternoon, saying it has signed contracts on five units, and that architects are doing designs on multiple other units that could be turned into sales.

The developers need to sell more units to get necessary financing to actually start building.

Mark Becker/Ft. Wayne Deputy Mayor: " The condo sales are going a little slower than we'd hoped, but then again, that's a reflection of the market that we're in right now. But I think we're confident that, you know, we'll work with our partners and they'll be breaking ground in the near future as well."

Tom Smith/(R) 1st District City Council: " I heard the mayor say Monday night, the condo project may be in some sort of trouble. That really worries me. We can't put in anymore public money. I noticed the mayor said kick start it, I don't know what that meant. But if it means more money, it isn't going to be there."

Councilman Smith said he wants someone from the mayor's staff to come to city council and explain what's going on.

Ground breaking on the condos needs to get going within about 30 days, so there’s enough time for contractors to sufficiently complete them before opening day for the Wizards next spring.
