Zoo Day!

By Nicole Pence

A tradition in the summit city, "Zoo Day" at Kroger and Scott’s grocery stores. This year, even more money expected to go back to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo.

Kroger will donate three-percent of its sales to the zoo on everything purchased Wednesday. That number is up one-percent from last year.

Many feared "Zoo Days" would go away after the Kroger chain purchased Scott’s stores. But, in fact, this year, 21 stores in the region will have specials and participate today...that's three more than last year.

So, where does all this money go? The Zoo's director says, right to the animals!

Jim Anderson: The donation from Scott's and Krogers doesn't go to our big capitol improvements like our African Journey Project. It goes more to the daily, monthly costs of feeding the animals, paying the employees, educational programs, putting gas in the trains."

John Elliot/Kroger: “In the end it comes down to the customer. So the more votes, or shopping they do the more proceeds to the zoo!”

Customers also have an opportunity to contribute to the zoo by giving one, three, or five-dollar donations from now until May 18th. Last year more than eighty-thousand dollars was raised.
