Indianapolis Police to Review Officers' Kicking of Burglary Suspect

By Peter Ambrose

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police will review officers' actions to determine if excessive force was used in the kicking of a burglary suspect that was videotaped by a television news helicopter.

A WTHR-TV helicopter camera shot footage of officers kicking
Felipe Alvarado, 26, of Indianapolis at least five times as he lay on the ground yesterday. One blow appeared to strike Alverado's head while arms were pinned behind his back.

A police spokesman says the department will look into whether
excessive force was used.

Police have said the officers were justified in kicking the suspect to subdue him following a ten-minute pursuit.

Alverado said in a jailhouse interview Wednesday that he panicked
when he ran from police and admitted he was carrying a knife. But he said he thought the officers should be punished for kicking him.
