McCain up close with Indiana's NewsCenter

By Melissa Long

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (Indiana's NewsCenter)
--- Republican presidential candidate John McCain was in Indianapolis today to address the National Sheriff's Association.

Indiana's NewsCenter was the only news organization outside of Indianapolis invited to speak privately with the Senator. Melissa Long talked with the candidate about key issues for Hoosiers.

McCain discussed his energy proposal to increase domestic oil production, develop a new battery-powered vehicle and develop 45 new nuclear plants by 2030. McCain drew a sharp contrast between his potential nominees to the US Supreme Court and those of Barack Obama. He also blasted earmark legislation as "disgraceful and obscene" and vowed to veto all such legislation.

His plan to overhaul the federal government does not necessarily include privatization, and he told the Sheriff's Association that he will seek to restore funding for local and statewide law enforcement programs.

He was accompanied today by Senators Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham.
