In Face of Rising Gas Prices, City Promotes Bike Lanes

By Jeff Neumeyer

FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- One way to beat the high price of gas is to hop on a bike instead of hopping in a car.

The City of Fort Wayne is trying to make that easier for people who want to get around town on two wheels rather than four.

The city is preparing to roll out a plan to create a network of bicycle lanes on streets across Fort Wayne.

Right now, most people ride a bike for recreation, in city parks, or on designated trails like the river greenway.

But over the next three or four years, we may see that start to change.

City planners want to encourage a safer way to use city streets for bike travel.

One of the first places you'll see the change is Rudisill Boulevard on the south side, where cars and trucks will drive on three lanes, not four, and bicycles will be able to run on a strip of pavement marked off on each side.

Other streets may go through similar re-configurations.

Director Pam Holocher/City Planning: " Where we do have excess capacity, we can actually just do with striping and paint, actually create a bike lane on the existing roadway. But there are going to be some roadways, I think, where we determine that there really is a need for a bike lane, where we may actually have to build something."

It will, of course, take some time to create a network of bike lanes.

In some cases, you won't see bike lanes built, but new sidewalks for use by bicyclists.

Already, there is the "share the road" campaign that tries to teach drivers to watch out for bicyclists.

That campaign will have to be ramped up, if more people use bikes for regular transportation.
