BBB Warns of Gas Card Scams

By Eric Olson

FORT WAYNE, INDIANA (Indiana's NewsCenter)--With the cost of gasoline topping out at more than four dollars a gallon, some businesses are taking advantage of consumers by offering questionable gas saving promotions.

One particular website has caught the attention of the Better Business Bureau. ‘mygallons.com’ claims their gas card program allows buyers to purchase a chosen number of gallons of gasoline at current prices in the future, even if the price per gallon rises. BBB officials warn such claims that sound too good to be true, usually are.

“The problem is that the person running this does not have this set up”, says BBB president Mike Coil. “The Better Business Bureau has checked, they do not have contracts with any gas companies and they don't have contracts with the investment company that was going to help them put this through.”

Officials warn consumers to beware of these scams. Similar programs for pre-paid natural gas purchases have resulted in several companies leaving customers with worthless cards.
