Candidate has Arrest Record

FORT WAYNE, Ind (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- He wants to lead our public schools in Indiana, but on his rap-sheet is an OWI and a domestic battery arrest. Nicole Pence has the exclusive.

Fort Wayne Community School board member, Kevin Brown, is campaigning as a candidate for the state schools superintendent post. But, our investigation found brown has an arrest record.

In 1997, Kevin Brown was arrested on a domestic battery charge. According to the police report, brown "threw a piece of chicken at his wife and hit her on the right side of her face." His wife then told police, brown "grabbed her and choked her." She was three months pregnant at the time.

When police handcuffed brown, police say he told the officers: "they were making a career threatening decision."

Fast-forward to 2001...four years later. This is a mug shot of Kevin r. Brown, after he was arrested for drunk driving in Allen County that April. When he was arrested, he refused to take a Breathalyzer test. We confronted the candidate this afternoon about his arrest record.

Kevin Brown: Superintendent Candidate: “It is not of any significance. We are there to assist the kids. If it was a child molestation of something of that magnitude, that may have been a consideration. But having a couple beers, throwing a chicken bone at your wife. It is minute."

Brown was not convicted of the domestic battery charge, but he did plead guilty to the OWI.

Brown's two arrests happened before he was elected to serve as FWCS school board member, in 2006. Brown can legally run for a state office because the OWI conviction is a misdemeanor, not a felony.
