FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The Fort Wayne Police are cracking down on moped and scooter safety regulations immediately.

Police Chief Rusty York spoke at a news conference Wednesday outlining a three-part campaign to increase moped and scooter safety.

“We are seeing more and more of them (mopeds and scooters) out there,” said York. “…more and more accidents; and more and more serious accidents.”

Exactly three months ago 18 year-old Brandon Belcher lost control of his moped crashed and died. He was not wearing a helmet.

Public Information Officer Michael Joyner says he hopes the campaign will help save other families from suffering a loss.

“We can look back at that incident to help support our effort and wanting people to understand the dangers of operating these vehicles,” said Joyner.

The three phases are:

1.Education
* Police will stop to review laws and equipment requirements
2.Stop and Tow
*Police will stop and tow the vehicle at the owners expense
3.Stop, Tow, and Cite
*Police will stop, tow, and write a citation.
Each citation may be different but can be $150.00

Phase one and two will take place over the next 30 days. After the 30 days police will begin issuing citations.
