FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- On the heels of a two-year old Fort Wayne girl drowning in a backyard swimming pool, what can parents do to protect their children from wandering into terrible danger?

One of the best ways to protect children from drowning in an "in-ground" pool involves use of a retractable cover.

It's made to support the weight of two adults and a child.

You can walk across the covers, though you should educate your child not to play on them.

There are other safety devices on the market, such as wave detectors that warn when a child may have fallen in the water.

John Denny/President-Tredway Pools: " There are little wrist bands that the kids can wear, that'll set off an alarm in the house, but also swimming lessons. I mean, a lot of people forget that, but swimming lessons are one of the best things you can do to protect them as well."

You can contact pool and spa dealers in the city for more information on other safety tips.
