DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The mother of an Ohio Marine killed in North
Carolina says she's shocked the suspect might delay or avoid a U.S.
trial by fighting extradition from Mexico.
Mary Lauterbach of Vandalia says Cpl. Cesar Laurean's appeal is a "tragedy" because prosecutors have worked so hard to lay the groundwork for a trial in for her daughter's death.
Laurean is charged with killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria
Lauterbach, who was pregnant. Laurean fled to Mexico before the
burned remains were found in his backyard near Camp LeJeune in
January.
He is appealing extradition, arguing that a treaty with Mexico
bars North Carolina's life-without-parole sentence for first-degree
murder.
