FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Less than an hour and counting and Indiana’s polls are slated to begin shutting down at 6PM. Though most will stay open later, to accommodate voters still in line.
Corinne Rose begins our team coverage tonight from the Fort Wayne Urban League. Where dozens of people are still waiting to cast their votes.
While the predictions about high voter turnout came true, across Allen County, people were waiting in line before the doors even opened at six this morning and precincts have been reporting steady streams of voters for the rest of the day.
Pundits had predicted about a 70% turnout. Which is a staggering number of voters, considering that the Indiana Secretary of State says at least 12% of Hoosiers eligible to vote had cast their ballots early and to show how seriously local people are taking their civic duty, two people fainted while waiting here in line at the Urban League today. After paramedics checked them out, they refused to leave, saying they wanted to make sure they voted.
Laura Donaldson continues our team coverage with Voter Demographics reporting that the workers at the Urban League say more black and young voters have cast their ballots this year than in years past. While they couldn’t have a specific number they say the increase is due to Senator Obama's nomination and concern about the economy.
Both campaigns canvassed the area heavily for young voters but one official said Senator Obama's team did a better job calling new voters and asking for their vote.
They say they've never seen this many people come through their doors.
