ALLEN COUNTY, Ind (Indiana's NewsCenter)-Allen County officials will soon have more property on their hands, property that's not really wanted.
Last week Allen County officials held their annual tax sale, selling off properties that owed back taxes.
But the tax sale didn't go as officials had hoped.
Nearly 2,000 properties were up for auction, only 30-percent of those actually selling.
The sale did help the county recover nearly two million in back taxes, but it also left the county with about 1,400 properties around the county, properties they don't want.
That number is more than three times what's usually left after a tax sale.
It will be a lot for the commissioners office to handle but officials say it's a problem that will eventually work itself out.
Allen County Commissioner, Nelson Peters, says "Ultimately it doesn't impact the tax payer because the goal is to get all of those properties back on the tax rolls. So I don't think in the long run it is going to be adverse but in the short term we'll probably see less money coming to the general fund."
Those residents who still haven't paid their taxes and other fees, still have 120-days to work with the county to try and correct the situation.
After that the county will begin the process of taking control of those properties.
