Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Older athletes from across Fort Wayne kicked off the 34th annual Senior Games Monday morning.
This year, more than 300 seniors are expected to participate in the three week competition.
Mayor Tom Henry says the Senior Games are one way to inspire residents to get involved and stay healthy.
The games are styled after the Olympics, and offer more than 20 physically and mentally challenging events.
However, talent and skill are not the only aspects of the game. Parks and Recreation Director Al Moll says the social aspect is just as significant.
“It's not about winning, it's not about competing, it's about active lifestyles,” Moll said. “We get a lot of feedback from the participants and that's what they're out here for is fellowship, getting out, give them something to look forward to. Over two to three weeks they just have a great time and we're just happy to be a part of it.”
The Senior Games include events such as bocce ball, pickle ball, softball, billiards and ping pong.
