UNDATED (Indiana's NewsCenter) - With an estimated 135 million many consumers will be buying their holiday gifts online this year and 5 million of them will be buying for the first time. Today is Cyber Monday, the Internets equivalent to Black Friday, and the kick off to the "online" holiday shopping season. So here are several tips to keep you safe while shopping on "Cyber Monday"... Or "any day" online.

Investigate the Seller

  • Anyone can sell online, so make it a habit to check out the contact information of the retailer.Avoid retailers who supply only P.O. Boxes and email addresses.

    • Check the Site's Security

  • Only do business with companies that use secure server technology. Check for url addresses that begin with https or shttp. Other signs can be a padlock or a security seal on the web page itself.

    • Pay by Credit Card

  • Paying by credit card is the safest and quickest way to shop online. If your card information is stolen you can activate the theft protection on your account.

    • Keep a Record

  • Print a copy of the order and confirmation number in case you have a problem with your purchase.

    • Although 75 percent of online retailers will be offering special deals... always follow the Internet Golden Rule; if it's to good to be true, it probably is.
