Goose Hunts to Close 2 State Parks

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Two Indiana state parks will close for two weekends so hunters can reduce the parks' Canada goose population.

Potato Creek and Summit Lake state parks will close Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 13-14.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says large numbers of the geese can degrade water quality and cause erosion. The DNR says non-lethal methods of controlling the goose population haven't worked.

The hunters taking part in the goose reduction were selected from a group of applicants in October.

Potato Creek is about 12 miles southwest of South Bend and Summit Lake is near New Castle in east-central Indiana.

The DNR also holds goose hunts outside of state parks in February.
