FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Community organizers say the economy is causing more students to drop out of college because they can’t afford it. Officials with Indiana’s College Success Coalition say Indiana ranks 44th among states in the number of adults with college degrees.
They say it’s no surprise because a 2007 survey shows more than six out of 10 students say they aren’t confident they’re doing what it takes to get into college.
The state has billions of dollars students can apply for by filling out a free college financial aid form or FAFSA form.
Organizers say students need to invest in their future.
“You really need to invest in your education because education is something on one can take away from you,” said Twenty-first Century Scholar Coordinator Glenda Ervins. “It’ll open a lot of doors for you, a lot of opportunities. You could triple your income that you would make if you only had a high school diploma. So you need to further your education.”
