HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Electricity was knocked out to thousands of people in Huntington County, South Whitley and Wabash County overnight.
The first outages occurred Thursday night when Duke Energy officials said four power poles broke in the Flaxmill Road area of Huntington. They could not say what caused the poles to break. Duke crews are working to get those poles repaired.
The incident initially left more than 3,400 Duke Energy customers customers in Huntington County without power. That number is now down to 1,700. But overnight, another problem occurred when a transmission line went out of service, cutting electriticy to more Duke Energy customers in Wabash and Whitley Counties.
According to Duke Energy's website, there are currently 1,775 outages in Huntington County, 38 outages in Wabash County and 290 outages in Whitley County. Though Whitley County police say the electricity is restored there now.
There were also reports of possibly hundreds of power outages involving REMC customers in Huntington, Noble and DeKalb Counties. Those have also been restored.
Because of the outages and the extreme cold, authorities in Huntington County have opened an emergency warming station.
The facility is located at the Salvation Army Headquarters on E. Market Street near the Drive-In movie theater. It's open to anyone needing shelter from the weather. Temperatures are expected to remain below zero today.
