FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Fire investigators have determined the cause of Sunday’s Baldwin Creek Apartments fire.
Investigators say the fire was accidental and occurred due to an electrical malfunction with a light fixture.
40 people were evacuated from their homes as a result of the fire and are now looking for a new place to stay.
Just before 8:00 Sunday morning, the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) responded to a call from Baldwin Creek Apartments, 1920 Hobson Rd., reporting a fire.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of a second floor apartment in building F. People were standing on their balconies waiting to be rescued. Crews managed to save everyone from the balconies and from inside the building, but one person was sent to the hospital in good condition for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
Crews were able to put out the fire by 8:22 Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the building sustained heavy smoke damage. Residents are being assisted by the Red Cross, and will not be allowed to return to their homes any time soon. In the meantime, the Red Cross has urged residents to stay with a family member or at a shelter.
Residents told INC News that at least one family has lost everything in the fire.
