Safety Upgrades Following Deadly Apartment Fire

By Brien McElhatten

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - After a series of three fires, one of them deadly, an apartment complex on the southwest side will implement new safety precautions.

Representatives with DEI Communities, the company that owns the Willows of Coventry Apartments, tell Indiana's NewsCenter that city officials have suggested adding fire resistant material to the wooden staircases on the property.

Questions exist over whether or not the decades old complex met fire code from 1987. That code requires sheetrock or insulation be applied to wooden staircases.

A fire on Janurary 23rd, killed roomates Lara Punches, Renea Patton and Jennifer Spurgeon. The young women were students at International Business College.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
