NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a man drowned while
attempting to flee from police officers by swimming across part of
a northern Indiana lake.

The Kosciusko County sheriff says a North
Webster officer responding to a report of suspicious activity about
5 a.m. Sunday came upon three people. While the officer checked
their identifies, one fled and tried to swim across a channel of
Irish Lake.

More officers arrived and waited for him on the other side. The
man began to struggle and could not make it back to either shore of
the channel about 30 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.

His body of 21-year-old Jarred Lee Neibert of Winona Lake was
recovered about six hours later. He was wanted on a theft and
burglary warrant.
