FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Bishop John D’Arcy has announced a plan to reorganize several catholic parishes in the diocese.
The plan lays out changes that include merging or even closing some parishes because of an uneven distribution of priests.
Most of the changes will occur at smaller, rural parishes but even then, the bishop plans to proceed slowly and with much consultation with priests and the parishes themselves.
Bishop D’Arcy says, “The smaller, rural parishes will create some controversy and difficulty, but I have the obligation to begin to consult. A parish is close to people's heart and you've got to be very careful.”
The plan is designed to be carried out over the next five to ten years. Bishop D’Arcy, who is nearing retirement did not want to leave the task to his successor.
