FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - After months of public hearings and heated debate, members of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission approved the site plans for Charis House Monday evening.

The 78-bed shelter for homeless woman and children will be located off Wells Street on Fairmount Place.

The plan has been under fire from business owners in the neighborhood. They say the structure doesn't fit in with the neighborhood plan. Opponents also criticize the project for taking up space and possibly hindering economic development along the Saint Mary's River.

Officials with the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission say the new Charis House is badly needed and will locate clients near vital social services downtown.

Charis House officials still need to work out details with City leaders, specifically with water and drainage issues, but the construction is expected to begin in late July.
