County Proposes Shakeup In Renaissance Square Building Purchase

By Jeff Neumeyer

FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- The City of Fort Wayne's plan to buy a vacant building downtown and turn it into a new city hall may now be revamped to re-visit the idea of co-locating city and county police.

Last fall, the mayor and Allen County commissioners considered situating police together in the City-County Building, but dropped the concept because of cost.

But it's coming around again, this time with a different building in mind.

Mayor Tom Henry announced June 23rd, his intent for the city to purchase the old Renaissance Square Building to move police, fire administration and most other city offices there.

The building offers 220-thousand square feet of space.

But on Monday, the county commissioners shook up the plan, sending a letter to Henry, the city council president, and Sheriff Ken Fries, suggesting the county could lease space from the city in Renaissance that could host both police departments, and that other governmental offices could remain headquartered in the City-County Building, which is controlled by county officials.

Mike Green/County Commissioner's Spokesperson: " We think it'd be beneficial to the public as well, because of the fact that they come down here to the City-County Building, to do business with city and county government, as opposed to splitting those units up, and having two different locations for people to have to go to."

Ozzie Mitson/City of Fort Wayne: " The mayor is open to talking to the commissioners on this topic and wants to see a detailed plan with numbers."

The numbers he is referring to involve the square footage county officials would anticipate occupying in Renaissance, how much they would propose to pay in rent, and how much they would propose to charge the city for whatever space it would continue to use in the City-County Building.

A meeting is set for July 14th.

The city is temporarily delaying purchase of Renaissance to allow the county to pitch its co-location proposals.
