Co-Locating City And County Police At Renaissance Square

By Scott Sarvay

June 18, 2010 Updated Jul 10, 2009 at 11:21 AM EST FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries has some hesitations about co-locating the city and county police offices in the Renaissance Square building. The county commissioners have suggested to the city and Sheriff Fries that the county could lease space in Renaissance to host both police departments, while other governmental offices could remain in the city-county building. Sheriff Fries believes the better idea would be to co-locate the two police departments in the city county building and let city offices move out. Fries says, “I don't like the Renaissance Square building. Parking is a big issue. It makes no sense to me that if we own a parking garage why would we pay to rent parking spaces from someone else. That makes no sense for taxpayer’s money to do that. I know the city county building needs some work to have us both in there but if the city moves out I know there’s a 120,000 square feet that needs to be filled.” A meeting is set for July 14th to discuss the feasibility of the plan and see if the city and county can come to an agreement.
