FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Esquire Cigar Club is now open for business, but many viewers want to know how the club can operate given the city's smoking ordinance.
Indiana's NewsCenter found the answer.
The ordinance forbids smoking in restaurants, bars and other establishments, but has provisions for smoking oriented businesses.
"The ordinance was written and allows retail tobacco shops the ability to allow people to smoke tobacco and try out tobacco inside," said Fort Wayne Assistant Fire and Fire Marshall Chief Jim Murua.
The ordinance allows businesses in which tobacco products account for 60% or more of total sales the ability to open their doors to smokers. While smoking is permitted in those establishments, the sale of food and alcohol is not. That prevents bar and restaurant patrons from lighting up.
"From the time you walk in the door, we want a place where you can check all of your worries at the door," said Esquire owner Dan Hoffman. "Come in, smoke a cigar, do some work, have a nice conversation ... just a real nice relaxing place."
The Esquire Cigar Club on Thomas Road charges a membership fee and has minimum tobacco purchase requirements. The club offers both private and corporate memberships.
Owner Dan Hoffman is a member of the Indiana's NewsCenter sales staff.
