Algae Bloom Plagues White River In Central Indiana

June 18, 2010 Updated Jul 14, 2009 at 1:42 PM EST CARMEL, Ind. (AP) - Floating brown clumps clogging miles of the White River through central Indiana have some residents worried even though state officials say it is a harmless algae. Carmel resident Dan Leby says has lived along the river for 30 years and that he has never seen anything like it. He says when he went to his boat on Sunday the clumps were so thick it looked as if someone could walk across the river. But Amber Finkelstein of the state Department of Environmental Management says tests determined it is a bloom of a single-celled green algae. She says such growths are natural and that it is better to let die off on its own rather than use chemicals. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
