INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis Public Schools officials have
recalled nearly all the 300 teachers laid off by the district this
spring.
The 34,000-student district had expected to lose about 400
teachers, but about 100 took early retirement or buyout offers. The
district then used federal stimulus money to rehire nearly 200 of
the teachers for a team of substitutes who can staff entire schools
undergoing training.
Attrition opened up other positions, and about a dozen teachers
who remain laid off are high school teachers in areas besides math
or English.
Teachers union President Ann Wilkins told The Indianapolis Star
that most of those laid off had expected they would be without jobs
and are grateful to be rehired amid the recession.
