NEW HAVEN, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - City officials are aiming to limit adult-oriented businesses in the New Haven.

"When visitors come to your neighborhood, where you come from, what do they see?," asked Mayor Terry McDonald. "What's their first impression?"

New Haven leaders are hoping first impressions don't come from sexually-oriented businesses.

Three ordinances will be up for introduction on July 28th. They aim to establish licensing requirements and rules for those establishments, as well as establishing penalties for violations.

The proposed ordinances would regulate hours of operation and the age of employees and would also establish guidelines for the issuance and revocation of licenses.

City leaders claim sex shops and clubs attract crime and unwanted behavior while lowering property values. Currently there are no standard zoning regulations, licensing procedures or penalties regarding adult businesses in New Haven.

The ordiances are simlilar to proposals that failed to pass in 2002.

The mayor says a controversial adult bookstore was the catalyst for the proposals. "Cupids Castle" was set to open earlier this year, but after much debate, the owners decided not to open the business.

The ordinances will be up for official introduction at the New Haven City Council meeting on July 28th.
