Former Indiana Legislator Leads In Fundraising Over Burton

June 18, 2010 Updated Jul 16, 2009 at 3:12 PM EST INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - New campaign reports show that former state Rep. Luke Messer has raised nearly twice as much in campaign contributions as any of the other challengers to longtime Indiana Congressman Dan Burton. The $205,000 that Messer has collected this year, however, trailed Burton's $253,000 as he looks to defeat the field of challengers in the 2010 Republican primary. Burton ended June with about $418,000 in his campaign fund for the heavily Republican 5th district seat, while Messer had $175,000. In all, donors gave more money to the four prominent challengers than to Burton, who was first elected in 1982 and is Indiana's longest-serving congressman. State Rep. Mike Murphy of Indianapolis reported raising $103,000, while Brose McVey of Carmel collected $102,000 and 2008 Burton challenger John McGoff raised nearly $39,000.
