FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- The Indiana Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced six-year-old Ariana Ugalde as the 2013 Fort Wayne Honored Hero for the organization’s annual Light The Night Walk.

An Honored Hero is an individual who has battled or is currently battling a blood cancer. Ariana offers us inspiration and encouragement, and provides a personal connection to the LLS mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Ariana was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in May of 2010. She is currently in the maintenance phase of treatment and continues to receive chemotherapy in pill form every day. Ariana also receives IV chemotherapy once each month. She loves to color and watch movies, and adores Cinderella and Princess Ariel.

Light The Night is an annual evening fundraising Walk to build awareness about blood cancers and raise money to fund research, education and patient services.

In 2012, the campaign raised more than $900,000 in Indiana. Anyone is welcome to participate in this event, either as an individual walker or to form a team through your company or group of friends and family. Individuals and teams of walkers raise funds prior to the event.

Local blood cancer patient Ariana Ugalde will serve as the Fort Wayne area Honored Hero and inspire walkers to fundraise by sharing her story of survival and hope. On the evening of the event, participants walk along a two-mile route carrying illuminated balloons—white for survivors, red for supporters and gold for individuals or teams walking in memory of a loved one lost.

You can register for the Fort Wayne Light The Night Walk held on Sunday, September 29 at www.lightthenight.org/in, or by contacting Melanie Kruth at (260) 616-0654. The event opens at 5 p.m. with registration, food and fun. The program and Walk begin at 7 p.m. at Headwaters Park West.
