Carmel Democrat Signals Run For Secretary Of State

June 18, 2010 Updated Sep 24, 2009 at 4:26 PM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Carmel lawyer who worked for eight years
under Democratic governors has signaled a run to become Indiana's
secretary of state.

Democrat Tom McKenna created an exploratory committee to look into a possible bid in the November 2010 election. McKenna was executive director of the Indiana Department of Commerce and chief of staff for then-Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan.

McKenna says voters' access to ballots is under attack and says he'll fight for the fundamental right to vote.

Indiana's voter ID law was recently overturned in court, but that decisions is being appealed.

Republican Charlie White has said he'll run for secretary of state. Current Republican Secretary of State Todd Rokita can't seek a third term because of term limits.
