FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- The union that represents Fort Wayne Community School teachers is leery of what may come from site visits paid to two district schools lingering on academic probation.
Site reviews happen periodically.
But there's almost certainly more at stake for the 23 schools across Indiana that are being placed under the microscope this time.
Education review teams from an outfit called “Cambridge Education LLC”, showed up last week at South Side and North Side High Schools, for the purpose of coming up with recommendations to improve academic performance.
Those schools, plus three in the East Allen system, are in year "four" probation.
A letter sent last week by the Fort Wayne Education Association to its teachers, referring to the site visits, included a line that read, “The future of FWCS is at risk.”
The letter went on to mention the prospects of school takeovers, closings and charter schools, including the phrase, "reality is setting in".
The reviews are intended to boost academic progress, but the Indiana Department of Education acknowledges that consequences await schools that don't get better.
Krista Stockman/FWCS Spokesperson: " I don't know ultimately what the state's intent will be, there is under Public Law 221 and under "No Child Left Behind", there always is that threat out there, that the state may ultimately take over schools."
Cambridge Education is based in Great Britain, and has a history of doing this kind of work worldwide.
Schools that don't get fixed by year "six" could face forced mergers and changes in management.
There is no specific information about how teachers at poor performing schools could be impacted, but suffice it to say, everybody is a little nervous right now.
