Two Norhtern Indiana Counties Refusing To Hold Transit Votes

June 18, 2010 Updated Oct 22, 2009 at 8:51 AM EST CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - Two northern Indiana counties won't be holding special elections next month as called for by state legislators on whether to create a regional transportation district. Officials in Lake and LaPorte counties have decided they don't have the money to rent and staff polling places for the Nov. 3 vote, while the referendum is being held in neighboring Porter and St. Joseph counties. The state Legislature passed a bill this year under which if voters in any two of the counties approve the new district, its board could set a local income tax of up to 0.25 percent. Lake County elections director Michelle Fajman says the County Council refused to approve the $414,000 needed to pay for the referendum. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
