The Numbers Are In On Co-Location

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The numbers are in and the Renaissance Square Project is going to be expensive.

The city paid two architectural firms to crunch the numbers on what it would cost to prepare the vacant Renaissance Square Building and City County Building for co-location.

And Monday Mayor Tom Henry said he's comfortable with what he sees.

The space studies found that the cheaper way to go for local taxpayers would be headquartering the sheriff's department and city police in the City County Building.

But the other option of situating public safety functions in Renaissance while splitting up other governmental offices between the two buildings would only run about $400,000 more overall.

The most expensive option would cost about $16.5 million on both buildings.

The county's worst-case scenario would involve an outlay of $7.5 million.

The county got a copy of the space study cost break downs Monday.

Mayor Henry says, “We have shared these numbers with the county already and I have asked county officials to let me know how they would like to proceed with the co-location by the Thanksgiving holidays.”

A-C Commissioners Spokesperson Mike Green says, “The city has had this information for a little while so they’ve been able to study it more thoroughly, we just received it today. So the commissioners want to take that time the mayor has given them.”

The renovation of Renaissance was forecast earlier to be about $8 million and renovating the already occupied City County Building appears to be just as much. So the numbers may give county officials some reason to pause over the next three weeks.
