AARP Endorses Health Care Bill, Health Care Rally Held On Capitol Hill

By Scott Sarvay

WASHINGTON (Indiana's NewsCenter) - AARP has thrown their support behind the House Democratic Health Care Bill.

AARP Senior Policy Adviser John Rother says that the $40 million strong organization backs the House bill, the reason he says is the measure closes the coverage gap in Medicare prescription benefits, puts strict limits on what health insurers can charge older workers too young for Medicare and creates a voluntary, long-term care insurance program.

Officials with the Seniors Lobby said the organization lost 150,000 members since July first because of the group's support for health overhaul.

The American Medical Association is also endorsing the plan.

A vote is expected to take place this weekend.

And it is those same health care reform plans that drew huge crowds to the nation's capitol Thursday.

Thousands arrived by bus on Capitol Hill, for a Republican-sponsored rally, hoping to defeat a Democratic health care reform bill moving through Congress.

They called the bill "Pelosi Care", and said it's akin to socialized medicine.

6th District Indiana Congressman Mike Pence was among those who waded in on the issue.

Congressman Pence said, Madam speaker we the people, we are tired of run away federal spending in Washington D.C. And we the people want health care reform that lowers the cost of heatlh care insurance, and not grows the size of federal government.”

Pence as well as others who spoke are urging those who attended to keep up the pressure, and keep letting their Congressmen know about their disapproval of the bill.
