Phil Troyer Announces Candidacy, Challenging Souder

June 18, 2010 Updated Nov 10, 2009 at 6:24 PM EST FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Congressman Mark Souder has a new challenger for the Republican primary in May. Fort Wayne attorney Phil Troyer announced his candidacy Tuesday morning. Troyer has worked for Dan Coats and Richard Lugar. He criticized Congressman Souder for his voting record, and cited 50-cases where he felt Souder's vote was not in-line with a being fiscal conservative. 3rd District Congressional Candidate Phil Troyer says, “There is definitely a movement out there that Congressman Souder has been there long enough. People don't know the facts yet. And when I walk them through the spending, they're shocked." Troyer ran unsuccessfully in the 4th district congressional primary in 1992. Tuesday he pledged $25,000 of his own money to start his campaign. The congressman said he's disappointed with the early tone of his opponent. While he welcomes the debate that it will bring, he said his focus will stay on defeating his Democratic challenger in November. Dr. Tom Hayhurst is the only Democrat to file for candidacy thus far. Souder also said many of the votes being referenced were earmarks included in bills with local money involved.
