Garbage Rate Hike Proposal On Huntington City Council Agenda

By Scott Sarvay

June 18, 2010 Updated Nov 10, 2009 at 5:34 PM EST HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Huntington garbage customers will be watching their city council meeting with keen interest Tuesday night, as the mayor is proposing a rate hike. Mayor Steve Updike laid off 12 city employees last week, including six firefighters, to deal with a $1.7 million budget shortfall. The mayor is also pushing a $10 a month rate hike per household for trash collection. Is that the best alternative? Carla Worthington of Huntington says, "I really don't want to see more firefighters or policemen laid off, because I think we, we definitely need those people. I just don't have any answers as to what he should do, what the mayor should do." Audra Wilson of Huntington says, "It really could keep people employed, so, I guess I'm okay with that. It's just another ten dollars. I think I can handle that." The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. A meeting organized by citizens will start at 5 p.m., where other options for closing the budget gap will be discussed.
