FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- In Warsaw, hundreds turned out on Tuesday to honor the memory of police officer Jeffery Shaw, who died pursuing his life-long dream.

Between 300 and 400 fellow police officers, including some from Fort Wayne, quietly filed into the Warsaw Community Church sanctuary late morning.

Along with friends and family, they celebrated a life that never strayed far from simple values.

Al Rovenstine/Former Kosciusko County Sheriff: " He had three great traits, love of family, love of community, and a desire to help people."

It all ended so suddenly November 12th for the 40-year old Kosciusko County Sheriff's Sergeant.

Patrolling in his squad car on State Road 14, a truck loaded with scaffolding slipped off the road, then overcorrected, striking and killing Shaw.

The truck driver, 53-year old Steve Byerly of Fort Wayne, was treated for minor injuries.

Police await results from toxicology tests done on Byerly, but the evidence right now suggests it was nothing more than a terrible accident, with no charges anticipated.

Shaw’s close friend Sgt. Chad Hill says the two officers and their wives traveled to Washington D.C. just last year, to visit the National Law Enforcement Memorial, dedicated to officers killed in the line of duty.

Sgt. Chad Hill/Shaw's Close Friend: " It's kind of difficult because we'd been out there honoring other officers and now unfortunately, come next May, I'll be out there and have to honor Jeff."

Jeff Neumeyer: " Others in the community had their own way of paying tribute, lining the streets downtown, as a caravan of public service vehicles streamed by."

Terry Finch: " I just feel bad for his family and that, and I just want to be here to support them. It's just sad."

Kaylee Wallace/Warsaw: " It's something that is felt by everybody, even though they didn't know him personally, so, I'd say it's going to be a rough day."

Shaw had the distinction of being born on the very day Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon.

Shaw’s lasting legacy will be as a husband, father of two young children, and a public servant who died doing what he loved.
