2 8th-Grade Boys Burned During Science Experiment

June 18, 2010 Updated Nov 19, 2009 at 10:32 AM EST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Two middle school students are being treated for burns received when a flash fire broke out during a science experiment. Tippecanoe School Corp. Superintendent Scott Hanback says 16 eighth-graders at Wainwright Middle School were conducting an experiment involving isopropyl alcohol when the accident occurred about 10 a.m. Capt. Rob Hainje of the Sheffield Township Volunteer Fire Department says a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old student, both boys, suffered burns. He says the 14-year-old was airlifted to Riley Hospital For Children in Indianapolis and the 15-year-old was taken by ambulance to Clarian Arnett Hospital. Details of their injuries weren't immediately released. The teacher was treated at the scene for minor burns to his hands. Hainje says the flash fire quickly extinguished itself.
