HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The controversial By the Book Bible trailer religious education program will be back up and running in Huntington by the end of the month.
Officials with the program say students at five Huntington county schools will climb the steps to the trailer November 30th.
The program had been suspended by a federal judge's order last spring. A Horace Mann Elementary School parent sued, claiming By the Book violated the separation of church and state because classes were held in trailers on public school grounds.
But program officials announced on Thursday the program will continue to serve 97 percent of Huntington County Schools third and fourth graders.
They say they’re able to do this because the trailers will now be parked across the street from the schools.
“We purchased cones for beside the trailer,” By the Book Director Teri Shiflett said. “And at each place where the trailer will be placed the steps are always away from the road. And there will be a volunteer who takes the children from the school to the trailer and then from the trailer back to the school. And that's true for every school whether they cross the street or not.”
Shiflett says students at Lancaster, Andrews, Northwest Huntington, Flint Sprints, and Horace Mann Elementary will begin their classes on November 30th.
She says the additional cost to move the trailers is being paid in part by area churches.
Parents do have to fill out another permission form if they want their student to participate. Students should have one, or parents can ask their child’s school for a new form.
