FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Generosity is a staple of the Thanksgiving Holiday, but one Fort Wayne charitable organization says the bad economy is making it tough to sustain help to the needy the other days of the year.

The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission prepared to provide 3,200 meals on this holiday, several hundred more than on a normal Thanksgiving.

But Mission officials say the sluggish economy is taxing resources to feed, clothe, and meet other needs for clients on a daily basis.

Carlton Smith, who supervised the big Thanksgiving meal event, says the established homeless shelter downtown is ramping up a more aggressive fund-raising effort to make sure donations are sufficient to stay ahead of demand in the coming months.

The mission is especially interested in getting more donations of gently used furniture to stock a bargain store that is seeing an increase in sales during this down economic period.
