George Rogers Clark Memorial Drops Entrance Fee

June 18, 2010

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - Visitors to southern Indiana's memorial to Revolutionary War figure George Rogers Clark no longer have to pay a fee to see his statue.

The superintendent of the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park recently got the National Park Service's permission to drop the $3 entrance fee.

Visitors over age 17 previously had to pay that amount to enter the circular rotunda that houses a bronze statue of Clark, who led a small force that captured the British fort at Vincennes in February 1779.

Superintendent Dale Phillips says attendance at the park has dropped, as has attendance at most parks across the nation.

He hopes that waiving the entrance fee will lure more people to visit the memorial, which recently underwent a yearlong, $3 million renovation.
