Indiana Transportation Agency Checking ADA Compliance

PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is
collecting information from counties, cities and towns to see how well Indiana meets the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The survey is being distributed by metropolitan planning organizations across the state. It asks local units of government if they've completed a self-assessment of their ADA compliance and if they have plans in place for addressing any issues.

Gary Evers of the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission says local units of government already should have compliance plans on their books.

The 1990 law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in transportation, housing, employment, government services and communications. It requires public buildings and businesses, sidewalks and other amenities to be accessible to people with disabilities.
