Indiana House Passes Tax Caps Measure Moves On To Senate

INDIANAPOLIS (Indiana's NewsCenter) - State lawmakers are closer to making property tax caps constitutional.

The House overwhelmingly passed a bill Monday to amend the state constitution. To limit property tax bills to 1-percent of a home's assessed value.

The measure now goes to the State Senate.

If it passes there, the issue would go on the November ballot for a statewide vote.

At the same time, an Indiana House Committee endorsed a bill to let voters decide whether to eliminate township trustees and boards.

Under the bill, people living in townships would vote in November whether to eliminate their township governments and transfer those duties to county government.

Some lawmakers say township government is antiquated and too costly to administer.
